2010 Travels : Moscow, Northern Ireland, Norway & Milano
Moscow Revisit : 26th April - 1st May
It was a Thursday morning. I was supposed to fly on the 15th April. As I woke up to catch my flight at noon, I went online just to read news. Suddenly the news of the volcano ash appeared. It says that all flights from Heathrow are cancelled due to a volcanic eruption in Iceland. I pinch my cheek. I thought I was in a dream. Ouch, gosh, it hurt. I knew then, it was not a joke but a reality. I could not imagined the severity of the situation until I had to cancel and rebooked my tickets more than 2 times, and finally I gave up and postponed my flight to 11 days later.
I called my boss the next day and I asked whether I could come back to work, 'coz it was boring staying at home, waiting in anxiety, not knowing whether I would fly the next day. So, there I was, managed to reschedule my holidays as well. Thank God I had a month tourist visa, which gave me the flexibility on the dates as well.
So, I spent the week in Moscow, revisited the Kremlin many times again and again. Well I went there almost everyday as the hotel which we stayed in was situated literally 10-15 mins walk from the city. Having experienced a Russian Opera at the Bolshoi Theater 4 years ago with 2 of my travel mates which we ended up trying hard to stay awake, I've decided to give the opera a skip this time. Instead, we went for the Russian ballet called " The Taming of the Shrew" by William Shakespeare. It was brilliant. Most of my days were also spent reading, drinking and chilling out at the hotel VIP lounge. I also went for a swim and spa(bubble pool). On our last day we went to a park on our way to B's cousin's place for dinner. After a delicious home cooked food, a taxi picked us up for the airport just in time for our flight check in.
Unexpectedly, when we checked in (we were one of the last few), we were told that the flights were overbooked and there were no more economy seats. We thought that we may have to turn back and wait for another flight, which we do not really want as it was really time consuming. Finally, guess what? We were upgraded to the Business Class. Neat! What a brilliant way to end the holidays!
Northern Ireland : 18th July - 27th July
Initially we wanted to go to one of the islands at the Southwest of England. Somehow, as we researched for the transport modes and costs, we ended up buying the air tickets to Belfast instead. Hence, our travel plans moved from Southwest to the North of UK. Haha, that is the extend of how fickle we can be
I would not elaborate much on the places we've been but rather summarize the highlights of the trip. On day 1 when we arrive Belfast, we took the bus all the way along the west coast, savoring every scenic moments during the journey all the way to Balintoy, a small village where I think the population is a mere 100k people. Despite of its tininess, we enjoyed the serenity, friendly people, calmness and fishing. Yeah, B managed to catch some fishes on our second day and we baked our very own fresh fishes for dinner. The highlight of the place was the "Carrick A Rede" aka the hanging bridge. It was a short but nonetheless a thrilling experience.
We also made friends with a couple from UK and Belarussia and they invited us for tea and sandwich at their place. The guy even invited us to cook for them the next day, but we decided not go to as we(or rather me) were shy. Anyways, the beginning of our holidays started well.
After Ballintoy, we left towards West to Portsrush (resort town and beaches), Giant Causeway (the World Heritage), Londonderry (the historical walled city), Omagh (for the boat ride to a secluded island and historic ruins) and back to Belfast. Despite the exhaustion from moving around, it was a fulfilling holiday, away from the buzz and busy lifestyle in London.
Norway : 26th Aug- 31st Aug
Vanessa came to London in June and met up with me & Fi for dinner. She invited us to her place in Norway. That night itself, I looked up at the flight tickets and voila, I've booked the tickets the following week for Bergen and Stavanger. Fi was supposed to come along, but I reckon due to money and visa issues, she decided not to come.
So, I took the 30mins train from CJ to Gatwick on a Thursday morning, but the excitement was only dashed with the 8 hour flight delay. Gosh, killing time in an airport was not easy. My carelessness in leaving my flight, hostel and train itineraries at the departure hall had me calling my friends in getting the booking reference numbers. I was given 16 quid worth of vouchers to spend for food and beverages at the airport, as compensation. So, I went to have a full late lunch at one of the restaurants in the airport and bought some sandwiches for my trip.
I arrived late in the evening at Bergen, was too tired to walk around the city, which was a pity as the weather was really good. Nonetheless, I decided to sleep early and left early for sightseeing the next day. Given the size of Bergen, one could actually cover the whole city in half a day. Given the location of the hostel which I stayed, which was in the heart of the city also helps to speed p the sightseeing. I've visited the Brygen, the old, colourful wooden houses which was the Unesco World Heritage. I even had time to take the 2 hours hike up and down to the Mount Floyen. I met a Chinese student who was taking his PHD in Bergen and we chatted on our way up and down. The view from atop was amazing.. With 2 hours to kill before my train to Stavanger at night, I headed back to the hostel and cooked some Norwegian fish cakes and shared with 2 Koreans whom I met in the hostel. Oh, by the way during the 2 days stay, I also managed to have chats with a Japanese, Polish, Irish and British. It brought back many fond memories of backpacking experience years ago.
After dinner, I spent my last 30 mins in Bergen , taking night photos of the city with these 2 Koreans mates. A definitely memorable way in ending my trip in Bergen, and off I went for the 16hours train journey to Stavanger, with a change at Drammen.
The train ended up with train and bus , and an hour delay to Stavanger. Nonetheless, I have arrived safely; I guess that is the most important point. V met me at the station. Despite the exhaustion, I was excited and happy to meet V and the location of her apartment which was only 5-8 mins walk, really helps. After a long train and bus journey, I longed for a fresh shower. At that moment, I could feel how those homeless and travelers must have felt, Once arrived at her apartment, I took a shower and brush my teeth. After that, we relaxed at home for a while. It was a Friday night and V's friend, S invited us with some other friends to her place for dinner. I helped V to cook the baked mushrooms with bacon stuffing (a dish which I have learnt and loved) and the Brazillian dessert " The Little Black Guy". I really enjoy the baking and cooking.
We left the apartment to S's place which was just around the corner and met up with the rest: 2 German guys, a Portuguese, a Dutch, an Italian and V's flat mate.
We had the baked cod fish (apparently it is a traditional Portuguese dish) which was very original, home baked German bread which was really fresh and impressive. Finally the dessert i,e ice cream and some Portuguese wine and cocktail. We then headed to the living room for a more cozy chat with some German and Portuguese wine. I really felt warmth amidst the quiet city of Stavanger. Just a perfect night to start my stay in this city!
The following day we headed to the Preikestolen aka Pulpit Rock. The ferry ride on the way to the base of the mountain was good as along the way, we witness the beauty of Norwegian fjords, sea and mountains. Needless to say, the view from the top of the mountain after the 2 hours hike was brilliant! I kept repeating to V that the scenery was really beautiful- just like postcards. The 2 hours rocky hike was definitely worth it. I can understand now why V would not mind coming with me despite her 4th visit. I would reckon that I would feel the same and would come along too. The view, fresh air, walk and most importantly the company along the hike, was good. We reward ourselves with ham & cheese, bread, yoghurt, and water at the top, satisfying our hunger and quesnching our thirst, and feeling really contented. We have made it!
The next day, I walked around the small city. I read that prices and standard of living in Stavanger has actually been inflated by the well paid oil workers/expats. I went to the old town, which was recommended by V, stroll along a street near the harbour where I witness some small and colourful shops and buildings, which were truly impressive, bypass an oil museum and a playground made with some oil mining instruments and equipments. Then it was almost time for me to go home and meet up with V for another all girls meet up at H's place.
One thing good about this city is that you can basically walk everywhere :). After about 20 mins walk, we were already at H's place. I met the other expats who were really friendly and we had salmon salad as starter and vegetable pie for the main. Plus, the ice cream with fresh strawberries, topped with melted chocolate as dessert . The food was so good. The international companies were really friendly and hospitable. I would never have thought that my trip to Norway would be so 'delicious' and ‘warm’.
On my last day, I intended to go for boating and cycling. Unfortunately, the weather did not permit me to do so. I ended up watching a DVD and TV at home, which was not bad as I could relax with the fresh sea air blowing thru the balcony of her apartment.
I left about 1 hour plus before my flight and took the airport transfer from the Radisson Hotel at the corner. The 30 mins journey was pleasant as the bus moved along the narrow road bypassing the tiny houses, lakes and green fields.
I was glad that I came to Norway and spent some quality time with V, an ex-course mate of mine. Come to think of it, we studied together 4 years ago and back then we've never thought that we'll meet in Norway 4 years later. But here we were, met, ate, chat happily, even watched film together in a quiet city down South West of Norway. Ahh, how fate twist :)
MILANO : 17th Sep-18th Sep
In 4 days time, I will visit the city of my Alma mater- Milan! It will be a business plus sightseeing trip, organized by my company. The venue would be at the Como Lake. I am looking forward for the workshops and the sightseeing at Bellagio (where the tip of the inverted U is located). So, here I will be again, 3 years passed and I will be revisiting Milan. I wonder 3 years later, from today, 12th Sep, where would I be?
Till then, stay tune. Ciao!

Experiencing London : Indoor and Outdoor (June 2010)
12th June- BBQ at Wei's Place
It was a nice weather to have a BBQ on this sunny and warm day. After gym, we left to Wei's place for the annual summer BBQ. It was only about 30 mins train journey from Waterloo. We had a great time chatting, eating and drinking under the warm sun at the neat garden of the couple. We had James delicious cheese cake and his usual lethal chocolate cake.We also talked about their newly bought GBP450 (or was it GBP495) blender from JLP which was rather amusing. We also bought Fiona along to join the fun. It was indeed a great day and as usual, I've already started looking forward for next year's BBQ with an addition of little Emily.
17th June- Project Management Forum/Seminar
I was invited by a friend for a project management forum and seminar at the Middlesex University. It was quite good. I came to know that my ex-lecturer, RM was the supervisor of my friend's thesis. There were many good speakers and panels from the risk consultancy and project management industry who were present. Some of the topics which we talked about were the recent volcanic ash crisis, Heathrow Terminal 5 project, transportation projects in London, etc. Though the venue was rather far, I was glad that I went.
20th June - "Out of the Piano" Show and "Elephant" Parade
Today is mum's birthday and also Father's Day. Initially we wanted to go to Zizzi to take advantage of their promotion, whilst at the same time to catch up with the other friends who we wanted to meet. But we ended up merging several gatherings and held a dinner at an Indian restaurant on the 19th instead, which were not really impressive as B&I did not feel well after the food. But getting to meet the others superseded the so-so food.
We also went to a show called "Out of the Piano". The composers compete among each other with their pieces sung by West End singers (apparently the singers include those who sang in the the 'Phantom of the Opera', 'The Wicked', etc). The lyrics are either composed by the composers themselves, or picked up from famous quotes and books like William Shakespeare. It was really impressive. Even the MC of the show was hilarious and kept us glued on our seats for the entire 3 hours. It was brilliant!
We then headed to Leicester Square to have a final look at the elephants which were paraded around London since the last few months. Now, the elephants were brought together and lined up along a street near Leicester Square where locals and tourists could take a final picture with these cute creatures. If you think that the elephants are real animals, I am afraid that you have misunderstood because the elephants which I meant here were the sculptures of the elephants, painted and designed with patterns and styles by art studios and celebrity artists. This effort is meant to support the effort of protecting the real elephants which are at the brink of extinction. The last look was worth while. We then walked home, feeling really tired, but satisfied.
25th June- "Ditch" Play @ The Old Vic Tunnel
I've got 2 tickets for the "Ditch" Play. The play is set during the war and how illegal immigrants and locals survive with meager food and condition. The content of the play was not easy to understand, to be honest. But what the heck, I reckon we went for the experience. I won't elaborate about the play but if you are really interested, just click on the link below:
http://www.oldvictheatre.com/whatson.php?id=64
What really impressed us was the venue of the play. The theater was actually set up in a tunnel, under the London Waterloo Station. Interestingly, we were seated on soft red, chairs like you can find in any top notch theater with different levels up from the stage. The props on the stage and around the tunnel, the atmosphere, lighting and the whole production were good. It was original and different from the rest of the popular musicals, shows or plays I have been and watch. There was also a nice bar with the 1950's setting in the tunnel, equally impressive. After the show, we left feeling really tired but were glad that home is just around the corner.
27th June - Beach at South Bank, London & 2010 Summer Science Exhibition
We went for a stroll at the South Bank for fresh air. The artificial beach set up by the Greece Ministry of Tourism welcomed us in the hot weather. The walk on the real, soft sand were so comforting. Ooooh la la, the natural foot massage on the sand was so good! :) We then left to the foyer near the National Theatre with the intention to see an outdoor exhibition but was welcomed with the sculptures of the flying dinosaur. We were eventually led into the Royal Festival Hall and awed by the 350th anniversary Summer Science exhibition. It was indeed a good stroll. Plus, we've got three bonus as well : fresh air , foot massage and food for the brain (knowledge). A perfect bargain:)

Cash & Materialism
I've learn one thing from the sermon last Sunday
"I give, and I learn to let go the grip of materialism."
Life is not about materialism or how much cash you have. I think most importantly, we appreciate what we have now which money cannot buy such as happiness, love, friendships, relationships, and life itself. Eventually, we will leave this earth and obviously we will leave all the material things which we have stored on earth. We can't bring them with us. What left with us, truly are the memories of the life we have lived in.
Humans are naturally greedy. I have seen friends who desire more cash/rewards for instance higher salary, more bonus even though they are blessed with decent jobs. On a higher end, I have friends working as expatriates in foreign countries , earning big bucks and living a more than a decent life. Some wanting even more material benefits, whilst some are keen to serve. On the other hand, I have also friends who were struggling to look for decent office jobs after many attempts whilst working as temp workers in coffee shops.
A story below inspires me :
A guy who earn $30 now, lives on $28.He donated all of his savings $2. A year later, he earns $60, still lives on $28, and he donated $32. 3 years later, he earns $100, still lives on $28, and he donated all if his savings $72. 5 years later, he earns $1500, this time he lives on $30, yet he donated all of his remaining $1470.
He says to himself, "The more I give, the more I can let go of the grip of materialism. I feel FREE! ". How many of us are actually selfless enough to actually do that? Give up all of your savings to serve God and others in need and live life to the fullest, with no regrets and without any material motives?
Every moment, THANK GOD..
"I give, and I learn to let go the grip of materialism."

Easter Break
1st April
My company gave the staff a treat at the Toscana restaurant where we had authentic Italian food, free flow of drinks, party and dancing all night. We had the whole restaurant for ourselves as the company booked the whole place just for us.
The mussels and clams as starter and the mouth watering monk fisk and scallops as the main dish deserve all the compliments that I can ever give. The good service and the warmth of the Italian owners and waiters never failed to bring out the brilliant Latin culture and mood of the night. Even, A DJ was hired to play an excellent range of music which entertain and accompany our dancing the whole night. As if that was not enough, cabs were hired to bring the staff home- the reasons being so was that we were expected to get drunk and hence not fit to be driving home.
It was indeed a nice treat for the hard work done. Thank you, F! It was indeed a good start to the long weekend!
2nd April
It is Good Friday. I went to the GPS for church after submitting the application at the Old Street. However, I was late and end up shopping at the Oxford Street. I've managed to get L's a present for her birthday next Saturday.
3rd April
T, F, P & I left for Brighton where we visited the Royal Pavillion, enjoyed the sea breeze by the beach, the sunny weather and shopping along those narrow shopping lanes, which reminded me of Italy. Oh, how the moments brought back the nostalgia. I love strolling along the tiny lanes, with those cute and artistic little mini shops on my right and left, just like the ones in Venice, Bergamo, Stresa and even Santorini. Yeah, as you can guess, we, the girls went shopping and all of us went home with dresses. We also got pretty good deals at the Oriental restaurant where we savored varieties of food from the lunch buffet. We took a nice coffee break in between the shopping to simply chill out with teas, sweets, chips and cheese as we chatted and laughed. It was indeed a lovely day out with just the gals indulging ourselves in our very own way. Bliss!
4th April
It's Easter Sunday. I left for church and invited F for lunch at my place after the service. We wanted to go to Clarks at a shopping mall nearby to get her a pair of shoes to go with her dress but unfortunately the shops were closed. I had to cancel my grocery shopping for the day as well. So, I left home and relax and chatted over the MSN and skype. In the evening, SM and I had dinner at TAS, a Turkish restaurant and catched up on our ol' good days. SM came to Europe for her backpacking trip and has been traveling around Europe for almost a month and she is due to leave on the 5th April. I gave her a treat and left to South Bank where we strolled by the River Thames, walked on the Millennium Bridge towards the St Paul's Cathedral, all under the bright London sky at night. It was beautiful!
5th April
SM and I left for the British Museum where we joined a tour on the Roman Britain. Then we left to meet A for dim sum at the Phoenix Palace restaurant, near Baker Street. Apparently, according to him, the place are frequently visited by the upper end patrons. Not surprised though, considering the setting and the location of the place are rather posh.
Then we headed to the Sherlock Holmes house nearby where we snapped several photos. We did not go in as the queue was long. We then left to Harrods for window shopping, just to share with SM the Princess D & D 's memorial. SM and A then invited me to their place. A bought us coffee and tea from the Starbucks nearby and we left to his place to chill out whilst watching the classic movie 'Cinderella'. It was a good movie in the English and French country setting. After about 2-3 hours chatting and relaxing, we send SM to Paddington where she took the express train to Heathrow. I am glad to be able to catch up with her again. A & SM were really nice lads. It reminds me that no matter where you are, friends still play an important role in your life. Ironically, I actually appreciate her recent presence in London, albeit a mere few days.
So, I am back at home now and would lay may tired body but fulfilling mind on the bed in an hour or so. Tomorrow, I shall be back to the normal grind again- work. But you know what, as I've always try to think positively and count my blessings, thank God that next week it is merely 4 days work:)
Hope that you had a good Easter break too, my friends.:)

City of Joy
Yesterday, I had 4 tickets to attend the performance at the City of Joy: Gala for the Women in Congo.I have invited I, M and her brother along.
Sam Roddick's (the daughter of the Body Shop founder Anita Roddick) & Tatania Giraud were there to give a very inspirational speech. The readings excerpts from "A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant & A Prayer" were all moving and I am sure they are bound to touch most if not all of the audiences who were present. The live music from Kasai Masai Band Group also did not fail to lighten the mood with some African music and dances. Also, the emcee with her great sense of humour and spontaneity brought the whole event well entertaining, enjoyable and meaningful. It was a well worth 2.5 hours time spent. Most importantly, I reckon the event has successfully create an awareness of the sex violence towards the women in Congo. May God bless and protect these women.

BA & BAFTA Event, 19th Feb 2010
I was lucky to have won two tickets to the British Airways(BA) and British Academy of Film, Theatre and Arts (BAFTA) Event at the Vinopolis, near London Bridge. I've actually just came back a few hours ago. I have invited N to come along, as the event and theme suits him perfectly as an actor. The main treat was to watch any of the 5 nominated BAFTA movies namely 'An Education', 'In the Loop', 'Fish Tank', 'Moon' and 'Nowhere Boy' on a wireless headset provided by the host.
First we were led by an usherer to the entrance where we were warmly received by the BA stewardess and stewards at the reception counter. We left our cloak in the cloak room and were given the wireless headphones. We then left to the open space where we were served delicious canapes which includes scallop, mini vegetarian burger, beef burger, hot dog, candies, pop corns, champagne, coca cola, wine and other alcoholic drinks. There were bars, waiters and waitresses walking around serving the canapes. There were also chairs by the bar, sofas, cushions and lazy cushion chairs for the audiences to just chill out, relax, network and enjoy the films shown on the five screens simultaneously.
We chatted for a while at the bar while savoring the food for an hour or so and headed to the Screen 1 after the official opening of the event for the film 'An Education'.
It was a good movie- the setting and language were perfectly contained with the 1960's feel. The plot is not sophisticated, nonetheless the director never fails to impress me with the moral values and the lessons that it was trying to convey. It was a moving film, even my friend shed some tears. Personally, I feel that the film is one of its kind, definitely different than the normal Hollywood movies. That is what makes it so unique, with its own style. It is classy and simply brilliant.
The movie per se, the cosy atmosphere at the Vinopolis, the BA & BAFTA hospitality plus the good food and the nice company of my friend - Ohh, the whole package was just too good to be true. It was certainly a great way to kick start the weekend. I truly enjoy myself. I reckon my friend did too. Thanks BA & BAFTA for the invitation. It was definitely a privilege for us to be there.
